January is here and with it, our new Spring schedule that includes old favorites and adventuresome new experiences.  Time to try something new?  Go caving with us in eastern Tennessee. Worried about the cold?  Have no fear, it's a comfortable 55 degrees inside, all year long.  Curious about the plant science behind your favorite libations?  Join us for our Botany Bar Crawl events at  Fullsteam, Bull City Ciderworks and Durham Distillery .  The schedule is below, or if you prefer, our Youtube video is here.  Many of these programs are for all ages. Muddy Boots
Adventure in nature with your preschooler at West Point on the Eno. We'll read a nature-themed book, take a walk on the wild side to find the nature right outside our door, and then have a snack. Children must be accompanied by a parent, and of course, wear boots or sneakers that can get a little dirty!
2-5 ages (children must be accompanied by an adult).

Botany Bar Crawl
Join DPR and some of Durham’s finest distilleries to learn how plants are used in the manufacture of adult beverages. We’ll visit where the plants are sourced, learn how they’re used, and hear about the science behind the libations at the distilleries and breweries.  Additional fee for facility tours and sampling may apply. Adults 21 years of age and older.

High Ropes Discovery Days
Come explore Durham Parks and Recreation’s high ropes course and navigate a variety of obstacles, some reaching 55 feet in the air!

Community Campfires
There may be nothing better than sitting next to a warm, crackling campfire. Durham Parks and Recreation Adventure Programs invites you to join us for our community campfire. We provide the fire and everything you need to make s’mores. You get to share a campfire experience with others in your community.

Caving Trip (#20241)

Come scramble, slide and squeeze through warm eastern Tennessee caves on this day trip. Safety equipment will be provided. Participants will need clothing that can get muddy and a change of clothes.

Jupiter Viewing (#20787)

Friday, March 4 from 8 p.m.-10 p.m.
What is over 300 times the size of Earth, was called Thor by Germanic tribes and has a moon larger than a planet? Jupiter! On March 4, this large gas giant will be in the ideal viewing position to see why Jupiter was so revered. Join DPR and NCCU Department of Physics and Mathematics for an evening looking through powerful telescopes and learning all about Jupiter. It is sure to be a gas!

Come join DPR and NCCU as we gaze at the stars as a part of the NC Science Festival’s statewide Star Party. We'll have high-powered telescopes and knowledgeable staff to create an enjoyable evening of exploring the night sky.

Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower Paddle (#20762)

Lake Michie Recreation Area – 2802 Bahama Rd.
"Have you ever seen a shooting star? On May 5, The Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower will reach its maximum rate of meteors expected to be around 100 per hour. We will take canoes and kayaks into the middle of Lake Michie so we can have the best view of the show.

City Lakes
Lake Michie Clean Up (#20847)

Lake Michie Recreation Area – 2802 Bahama Rd.
 This clean up is appropriate for ages 13 and up. Durham Parks and Recreation will provide canoes and cleanup supplies to help keep Durham’s primary reservoir in pristine shape.

Sunset Paddle (#20240)

Savor a spring sunset by paddling canoes and kayaks on scenic Lake Michie with DPR Outdoor Recreation. We will provide the equipment, you bring weather-appropriate clothing.

Join Durham Parks and Recreation on a nice Sunday afternoon for a two hour sailing clinic. The whole family can lean how to sail two different types of boats and maybe even participate, just for fun, in a sailboat race.

Durham City Lakes Opening Celebration (#20784)
Saturday, April 23 from 12 p.m.-2 p.m.
Lake Michie Recreation Area – 2802 Bahama Rd.
Join Durham Parks and Recreation to celebrate the beginning of the 2016 season. We will have a cookout, an assortment of paddle sport boats to try such as kayaks and paddleboards, and fishing equipment to use. We look forward to seeing you at beautiful Lake Michie!

Lake Michie Crappie Tournament (#20783)
Saturday, April 23 from 6 a.m.-11 a.m.
Lake Michie Recreation Area – 2802 Bahama Rd.
This tournament (first of three scheduled at the Durham City Lakes for 2016) will determine winners by the total weight of their three best fish.  The fish must be alive at weigh-in.  This is an individual tournament, no team competition. Pre-registration is required and all regular lakes fees apply for bank fishing or boat launches.
